First Day of 2nd Grade!

We all loaded up this morning to take C to his first day of school.  The traffic for drop off was crazy!  Instead of sitting in the long line of cars I told C that I would hop out with him and we could walk the rest of the way.  Our walk only lasted about five minutes or so but it was such a precious time.  We chatted about who he hoped was in his class and what time recess might be.  As we made our way through the cross walk he told me that 2nd graders were big enough and they didn't need to hold hands anymore.  "But don't worry mom, I'll never be too old for hugs and kisses."  I told him that was good because I'd still want to hug and kiss him even when he was in college.  He said that would be ok, but wasn't sure how often it could happen, since he didn't know when he'd be able to come home and visit.  "Oh, but I'll probably have a car when I'm in college.  That will make it easier."  I smiled at him and resisted the urge to wipe that tiny bit of icing off his cheek left there from his cinnamon roll at breakfast.  "Leave it" I said to myself.  He's growing up so fast and that little smidge of icing reminded me he's still just a little boy.  So off he went, a spot of hair that didn't want to lay down flat, his Great Wolf Lodge wristband that he has no plans to take off, and some icing on his cheek.  I hope this year he grows even more comfortable in his own skin.  That he embraces his unique gifts and can learn to acknowledge that we all have areas we struggle in.  And that it's ok. It's ok to make mistakes.  It's ok to have a bad day once in awhile.  But, we keep learning, keep trying, and keep smiling!
