Girl on the Run

Back in October 2008, C and I took a trip to see my sister.  While we were there, I ran my first 5K.  We were quite a sight.  It was cold and raining.  In an attempt to protect C from the elements, we put him in the jogging stroller and fashioned him a trash bag cocoon.  Which later I realized just made me look like a bad parent.  You should've seen our race photo.  I look like I'm about to die and there's my sister pushing a stroller that may or may not have a child inside...the only indicator being the one rain boot sticking out from the bottom of the trash bags.  The other boot had been lost somewhere near the turnaround, which consequently was marked incorrectly so we went to all this trouble and didn't even run a full 5K!  In 2008, I ran my first "almost 5K."  And this year I decided it was time for redemption. ;)  My sister has been involved with the Girls on the Run program in the past and this year she organized their first 5K.  When she told me she was going to be the race director, I decided I would run my first real 5K.  When she showed me the cute mugs for the top finishers, I decided to win!
It's not that impressive.  Winning really just meant I had to be one of the top three finishers in my age group (and there weren't that many of us) but I placed 2nd in my age group and 43rd overall out of 238 runners, I think.
Hubby came along too and was a great help taking care of the boys for much of the weekend.  He even offered to stay with them while my sister and I enjoyed dinner out after the race.  (Granted both boys were sleeping so it wasn't too much work)
Twice in the past month C has had interactions with younger children in which their parents have said how great he is with little ones and asked if he has siblings.  They've been surprised that he's the only one so far and stated they think he will be a great big brother.  I think so too. :)  For now, he's embracing the role of big cousin.  The older these two get, the more fun it is to watch them interact.
I leave you with a totally unscripted moment, and definitely the sweetest one of our visit.
