Seeking Spiders

Yesterday we went to a little Kids Seek Spiders class at a nearby wildlife refuge.  I just happened upon the information for it and turns out they have these FREE classes regularly.  We'll definitely be going back.
If for no other reason than it was painfully apparent that my boy needs a lot more practice being "one of many."  I sat back, hoping to let the instructor handle it, but felt the need to step in when C chose not to heed her 'let's let someone else have a turn' and 'why don't you hold onto that question in your head until later' admonishments.

After a bit of a 'talking to' out in the hallway he did exercise a little more self-control (but not much).  Thankfully they headed outside soon for the spider hunt.
C found one tiny spider all on his own.  He then yelled "spider, spider" in the most high pitched voice I've ever heard. :)

Although they were hoping to pick up spiders in their nets, he was thrilled that he snatched up a baby cricket when it was his turn.  Requiring the previously mentioned high pitched squeals of excitement, of course.
Counting out eight legs for his balloon spider.
He said that making the craft was his favorite part.
As we were leaving, I expressed my disappointment with his behavior during the "class" portion of the event.  I told him that being in a group is different than when it's just he and I.  Tried to explain that there's just not enough time for each kid to say everything they want to.  Reminded him that saying excuse me over and over again and waving his hand in front of the teacher's face while she is speaking is rude and disrespectful.  Typing that out kind of made it sound like I was raking him over the coals, but I wasn't.  I was just trying to have a calm, frank conversation with him.  I told him I'd like to bring him back for more events like this if he thought he could make better choices next time.  He didn't get upset and start bawling (which he's been prone to do lately when he receives any type of correction)  He just looked at me with sad eyes and said he could do a better job.  Then he said, "Thank you for bringing me here Mama.  I really liked it."  Sigh.  Sweet, tender-hearted boy.  I love you.
