Catoctin Zoo

We're headed to Kansas toward the end of May.  The same time when C's class is going on a fieldtrip to the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo.  We didn't want him to miss out on it completely, so we thought we'd check it out ourselves.  And also, some of the crazy reviews online had us thinking "We have got to see this place!"  Haha!  Some people thought they should be shut down, it made others sad to see the animals living in those conditions, and one person even claimed the wolves were suffering from dementia.  Others, however, thought the place was great.  See why we were so intrigued?

I thought it was a fun little place.  They had some different animals that you don't see at some of the bigger zoos.  And a ton of snakes, which C loved.  Their playgrounds were pretty sketchy and there were gnats everywhere!  I spent most of the time fanning them away from my face with C's hat.  Other than the bugs though, we really enjoyed it.  And we did not see any signs of dementia from the animals...but then again, I'm no veterinarian.

The monkeys were putting on quite a show!  Maybe that's why they have bleachers set up in front of their enclosure.

Doing the butterfly stretch in the butterfly garden.

I love this one.  Daddy and his boys!

I'm not sure if petting the fish was allowed, but C sure did have a good time doing it!

Feeding the animals in the petting zoo area.

It took C a few times to warm up to the idea, but then he was running all over the place choosing which animals to give his food to.  He spent most of his time making sure the two baby goats got enough to eat.

Lil' peanut never did warm up to the idea. ;)  Doesn't he look terrified in this picture!?  Poor guy!

Now this will make a mama nervous.  C loved that he was so close to them.  And he really got a kick out of that one in the bottom right corner.  Yep, the one that looks like he's about to have my child for lunch.

We had a fun morning checking off something from our "need to do before we move" list.  Next up, a final trip to Williamsburg this weekend!
