Some of my favorites...

We got home yesterday from almost two weeks in Kansas.  We had a wonderful visit and I'll blog more about it soon.  But, in the meantime, I wanted to share a few pictures that I am loving right now...
A new family photo!  Hubby flew in to KS for a very short weekend while we were there.
This is a big improvement from our last attempt on Christmas which you can see here.
And these next photos...they are displayed right inside my front door...and I can't stop looking at them.  And I can't believe that I will be a mama to another beautiful baby boy!
I am still reeling...

He's reading!

Just because I don't want to forget this milestone!  Just shy of 4 1/2 years old, C has started reading.  Last week I busted out some ABC flashcards and on a whim put some simple words together and he was able to sound them out.  This week he's graduated to reading super short sentences.  My word choice is limited because we've only covered one letter sound for each letter we've learned thus far in pre-k.  But, here are some examples of the sentences he's been reading....

Cat is fat.
Dog sits on pig.
It is hot.
Stop kid.
No hit.
Batman helps frog.
Mom and Dad hug Christopher.
Frog hops.
Fun in sun.
Bug jumps on log.

I made a little video on my phone and sent it to hubby so he could hear him.  I have no idea how to put that on here...but it's very reminiscent of Word World (for those of you w/ kids who watch it).  He says each letter sound and then smooshes it together.  And that's the moment that he gets a smile on his face because he realizes that those letters make a word and he actually knows what it is.  It's incredibly precious...to watch the very beginnings of this life long skill start to take shape.  I'm so proud.  And humbled...to think that I get to be the one to lay this foundation.  I'm excited to continue on the journey of reading with my boy.

It's Batwoman...or not.

C is the usual recipient of packages around here...so imagine my excitement when a box arrived from Grandma and Grandpa and I pulled out my very own superhero shirt.
Finally, I too can help save the world!
Or not.  C insisted on referring to me only as evil Batwoman or owlwoman.  I guess for now there's only room for one superhero in our house.  Hopefully once Daddy returns I'll finally be able to realize my dream of playing for the good guys and C and I can team up to take down the hubs!
I think we'll be an unbeatable team...
...don't you?

Mama said

Mama said there'll be days like this.
There'll be days like this my mama said...

...except she didn't.

I think her brain turned to an ecstatic pile of mush the day I told her I was pregnant.  With the knowledge of a soon-to-be grandchild taking up so much residence in her mind that all the memories of her own child-rearing days seemed to go out the window.  And once that little bundle of baby love arrived she was too busy swooning to think about giving me a heads up on things to come.
It wasn't until she began to get teary phone calls from her daughter that she realized her sweet, innocent grandbaby had grown into a little boy with an iron will...determined to push his mother to within an inch of her sanity.  It was only then that she began to see the error of her ways. ;)  I remember calling my mom in tears for the first time when C was not yet two.  I had been forced to drag him away, kicking and screaming, from a playground yet again...the swing was what he wanted and he refused to do anything but stand next to it and scream bloody murder until he got his turn.  My husband was working (and living) two hours away and my child was suddenly changing into someone that I didn't enjoy being around all the time!  To be honest, I downright wanted to escape from him sometimes.  I cried as I asked her, "Did you ever feel like this?!"  And then she began to regale me with stories of the exasperation she herself sometimes felt as a young mother. (stories that never featured me, of course)  Oh, how those stories have sustained me.  I don't know what it is about moms these days.  It seems most of us are too busy comparing our parenting styles and making judgements to say, "Hey, you know what?  We're different.  Our kids are different.  And, by the way, isn't being a mom the hardest thing ever?!"  I don't want to paint an inaccurate picture here (I know I have one friend without kids who reads and I don't want to terrify her!) ;)  Being a mom is also the BEST thing ever!!!  There are so many moments that make me think, "this could not get better."  Unfortunately, they are tempered with moments that make me think, "this could not get worse."

Like last night.  C was watching an episode of Animal Atlas while I was getting in my run on the treadmill.  He decided to misbehave.  I told him that if he did it again his show was going to get turned off.  Can you guess what happened next?  After a bout of crying he did calm down and kindly ask me for another chance.  I told him that we could try it one more time, but if he repeated the misbehavior the show would be turned off permanently.  And all went well...for the next 3 minutes.  The show was turned off as promised and I continued my run.  For the next 15 minutes I ignored the hysterical child and just kept running.  He started up the stairs telling me he was never coming back down...pausing at each step to scream, "I hate you!"  He only made it halfway up before he came barreling back downstairs changing his tune to, "Oh, she hates me!  What's wrong with my mom?  She won't listen to me!!  She hates me.  This is all my fault."  I resisted the urge to agree with him and kept on running.  The louder he screamed the faster I ran.  I have never...and I mean never in my life people...run 3 miles in less than 30 minutes.  Just think of the shape I could be in if every time he began a tantrum I jumped on the treadmill. :)

I've called my mama in tears more often that I'd like to admit these past few weeks.  Again, my husband is gone and my child is bringing new meaning to the word challenge.  Now that her sweet little grandson has turned into a skilled and determined warrior who wages battles of the will daily in our home, my mom seems to be able to recall more and more about the challenges of raising her little ones.  She offers me encouragement and orders me books like Dare to Discipline and The Strong Willed Child.  And even in the worst moments I can't help but smile at the irony that one day...one day, I will be on the phone with C as he sighs in exasperation and says, "I don't know what to do with him."  And I can offer him advice and encouragement because I will have been there.  Lord willing, I will be able to say something like, "Take heart...it'll get better...you turned out just fine."

Later in the evening, after discipline had been doled out and reconciliation had occurred...my little man and I laid in his bed together after reading bedtime stories.  After a few minutes of silence, he popped up and declared, "We forgot to pray."

"You're right.  Do you want to go first?"

"Yes.  Dear Lord, thank you for this healthy day.  And thank you for forgiving us and love.  It's not so good when my mom does bad things.  Could you forgive her please.  Yes, you could?  In Jesus' name.  Amen.  Your turn."

"Dear Lord, please grant me patience."
And then, since he doesn't care to hear it yet, I told myself...take heart...it'll get better...he'll turn out just fine.

My growing, silly kid!

Yesterday we got out our bag o' beans for some counting practice.  And somebody counted to 100 almost all by himself.  He only looked at me for help with two numbers!
So far the bad weather coming our way hasn't hit yet, but the cold is enough to keep us hunkered down inside.  Someone has gone through a growth spurt!  (Which he never chooses to do at a more convenient time like with the changing of the seasons) :)  So, I have been working on pulling out our hand-me-downs, doing laundry, and organizing his closet.  Right now all his pants are in piles in the corner of his room because on top of all that...his dresser bit the bullet a couple of weeks ago.  It was never the best quality, got damaged a little during the move, and it's gotten increasingly harder to open and close the drawers.  The front of one drawer is hanging off and for the life of me I can't get the other two to stay on their track.  It looks like the track the little wheels run on is bent so I don't think there's much hope left.  Guess I need to start perusing craigslist for a deal on a new dresser.  C spent the entire hour I was working on all this playing next to me pretending to be my pet roly-poly, tiger, and snake.  My little pet followed me downstairs to watch a movie and said he wanted to sit in his cage so he could stay nice and toasty warm.
 Love this silly kid!

Motherhood is even sweeter...

...when shared with people you love!

I have really been blessed by living near my sister since we moved out east.  It's wonderful to be able to share together in the joys and trials of raising boys!  C has always had an affinity for his Aunt Net and it only continues to grow the more time he is able to spend with her.  And my nephew is the cutest little thing!  It's so fun to get to watch him grow and change...he was using words this time!  His "more pease" is pretty much the sweetest.  We went to the aquarium this weekend.  I laughed as I watched my sister chase after B like a crazy person because I sooo remember those days.  And I laughed at the irony of C's sudden fascination with looking at every. single. fish.  The last 3 times we've been he has zoomed through the place with his face buried in the map not stopping at one exhibit.  And this time, when it would have proved very useful not to care about "stopping to look" he spent many thoughtful minutes peering into tanks as B ran laps with his mom taking people out like a defensive lineman to keep up with him.  Anyway, we really enjoyed having our family in town and are already planning our next trip to WV!

Shoveling snow sucks...and I love my baby

Hate this...

 But this...this I love.
My boy and I have hit another one of those rough patches.
And I love these sweet, smiling moments.
They are what gets me through the day.
